" Lithe, supple and generous with its currant, blackberry, pomagranate, and sweet spice notes, riding easily on a silky texture that lets the flavors reverberate gently. Drink now through 2012. 575 cases made." -- H. S. |

A terrific food-friendly red wine is the Lost River Winery 2004 Cedarosa (about $26), a blend of 55 percent merlot and 45 cabernet franc. Cabernet franc can sometimes taste a bit vegetal, but there’s no hint of that in this wine.It has a lovely nose of fresh berries, mild cherry and red currant flavors, good acidity and a long finish that make it a natural to pair with lamb, pork, or even barbeque chicken. This is another fine effort from the Winthrop winery that continues to broaden its spectrum of wines with good results. Production of Cedarosa is microscopic – less than 100 cases were made. |

This new little winery in the North Cascades is on a roll. Its Merlot won Best of Show at last fall’s Tri-Cities Wine Festival, and now it’s followed up that success with this superior Cab. Aromas of vanilla, oak and dark fruit only hint at the explosion of flavors to come, including mouth-filling notes of broad, ripe berries and a hint of lip-smacking chocolate on the finish. |

A tiny winery in the backwater burg of Mazama, Lost River is making some of the best, affordable boutique wines in Washington. Don’t look for a fancy label, but get a load of the fruit and style in the bottle. This is an elegant merlot showcase, a perfectly shaped expression of supple berry and cherry flavor, tart, vivid and racy. Lean, not mean; it’s a classic. — P.G. (12/1/2004) |

The first release of the new Mazama, Wash., winery is a real treat. Using Walla Walla Valley grapes, Lost River has crafted a bright, charming red with aromas of sweet cherries, blueberries and vanilla and well-balanced flavors of strawberries, rhubarb and peppercorns. Velvety tannins provide approachability through the rich chocolaty finish. |

What a score! This is sexy semillon, kissed with honey and flowers, and supple with a round core of delicious, intriguing, complex fruits. Pear, apple, blood orange and more are wrapped in a thoroughly delicious, well-rounded mid-palate, and the wine extends itself effortlessly into a lingering, delicious finish. Light enough to be food friendly, yet complex and wonderfully concentrated. — P.G. (12/1/2004) |
